Although this is a Canadian video from 3 years ago, it exposes just one issue with bottled water in top brands like Aquafina (Pepsi), Dasani (Coke) and Pure Life (Nestle).

Hi. This is Rick from Pure Elements Water. I just want to take a moment and quickly run down the list of six goals that you should have for any whole house or total property water system.

We were contacted by a Laguna Beach client, after installing one of our systems, with reports of water tests results with pH of 6.0 (highly acidic) and 30-50 parts per million of lead.
The pH is extremely acidic and would not be something we would consider as healthy for consumption over time.
This lead level is devastating to health over time – The maximum “Action Level” is set at 15 parts per BILLION with a health goal of zero.
The client bought a do it yourself (DIY) water kit that was providing completely inaccurate results in many of the line items on the test strips.
In fact several categories on the items list show measurements in the wrong register (parts per million that should be parts per billion, for example, and pH is not measured in parts per million.
We tested water from our HealthyHome whole house filter and salt free conditioner, our purified remineralized slightly-alkaline drinking water system, Kroger brand purified bottled water and the raw city water.
The real results were stellar from our systems, with pH levels about 8.0 (slightly Alkaline) and perfect balances of mineral content.

Not a lot has changed. The healthcare community in general is looking for water that has some natural mineral content in it and reverse osmosis systems contrary to that philosophy strip the majority of the minerals out.
The healthcare community is also looking for water that is at least slightly alkaline. In some extreme cases high alkaline.

Reverse osmosis systems by nature, by their process, create an acidic water, which is something none of us wants is the acidity.
This is very similar for purified waters in bottles and once you have an acidic water in a plastic bottle you're leeching chemicals into that water from the plastic just compounding your issues.

So still it is better to do purification when you do reverse osmosis it needs additional stages to add back minerals, natural coral and calcium and magnesium.
And bring the pH up to at least a 7.5 slightly alkaline rating.

Another option we debated was EPOXY lining of the existing copper pipes. This was a more conservative option to PEX. It seemed that both PEX and EPOXY were addressing the damage caused by chemicals in the water, mainly chloramine. BUT neither addressed the main cause: the water chemistry -- the chemicals in the water itself that are causing the damage.
